Glanceable:

Explorations on Information Density

Explorations on curating information on a small communal screen from distances cited in product design brief.

Project contributions:

  • applied research

  • visual design

  • accessibility studies

  • lead UX design

Goal: Glanceable information from 10+ feet.

Problem: User feedback confirmed existing text size was only viewable from 3-4 feet and pace/info density were high mental load.

  • What’s the most important information and what can be simplified?

  • Are there improvements for accessibility?

  • Can the user see this information when they enter their space?

As-is: An example of existing information density.

Solution 1: Clock and Headline Prioritized

  • Primary information from 6’. Minimal element updates

  • Primary information of Clock and Headline are prioritized for 6’ viewing.

  • Removed secondary elements. Reduced Headline to 2 lines.

  • Familiar design that balances lower engineering lift and incremental information density improvements.

  • NOTE: Default card duration is 10 seconds. Example below is 3 second intervals.

Solution 2: Combined hint headline for tap/voice

  • Clock at 8’ visible, Keyword hint is 6’ visible

  • Visuals and stylized backgrounds used and card has heavy reduction of text information.

  • Smaller text results in 4.5’ readability as tradeoff.

  • “Alexa, show me..” and word bubble used intermittently and repetitively to remind user that topics can be launched with voice

  • NOTE: Default card duration is 10 seconds. Example below is 4 second intervals.

Solution 3: Oversized info on simple background

  • Large text and icons in high contrast with background

  • Clock is 108 pt (8’ visibility).

  • Simple visual in 240x240 square format (Album Art Format and Library Icon friendly)

  • Card Type is also voice-forward key word to start domain experience. 108 pt (8’ visibility).

  • CTA button oversized - 98x98.

  • NOTE: Default card duration is 10 seconds. Example below is 5 second intervals.

Solution 4: Persistent clock/weather with content

  • Fixed 33% screen for clock and weather

  • Time is viewable from 6’, headlines are viewable from 3’

  • Contained images reduce device memory requirements

  • Content aware backgrounds

  • 66% screen allows for programming and customer interests

  • Hint for voice prompts intermittently appears under weather

  • NOTE: Default card duration is 10 seconds. Example below is 3 second intervals.
